How do I arrange a celebrant?
When you contact a celebrant you need to check he/she is available for your chosen wedding date.
Do I need to fill in any papers when I’m arranging a celebrant?
Yes, you will need to complete, sign and have your Notice of Intention to Marry form witnessed by a qualified person.
Do I need to provide the celebrant with any information other than the Notice of Intention to Marry form?
Yes, you will. If you have never been married before and were born in Australia you will need to show the celebrant the original of your birth certificate.
I was born overseas, are there different requirements for me to someone born in Australia?
Yes, you will need to provide your overseas passport when you arrange your wedding with the celebrant. If you don’t have an overseas passport you can make a statutory declaration about when and where you were born.
What if I’m divorced, do I need to tell the celebrant?
Yes, and you will need to show the celebrant the original divorce certificate.
Can we have our own vows?
You can have your own vows, but there are strict legal requirements about what the vows must contain. Many couples choose to have their own vows as well as the legal vows that must be taken.
